How to Turn Off the Water to Your House
How you close the valve depends on its type:
- Lever handle (ball valve): turn the lever a quarter turn until it sits across the pipe instead of in line with it.
- Round wheel handle (older gate or globe valve): turn it clockwise until it stops. Don't force it if it won't move.
To test it, close the valve, then open a tap on the main floor. If the water slows to nothing within a minute, the valve is sealing. Open the valve again slowly to avoid a pressure surge.
If the handle is stuck, leaks when you turn it, or the water keeps running, stop and call a plumber. Forcing an old valve can break it in the open position.
The City Curb Stop: Your Home's Exterior Shut-Off
Every property also has an underground municipal shut-off called a curb stop. It sits inside a protective curb box somewhere between the house and the street. In Vaughan, that box may be in the grass boulevard, the driveway, or near the sidewalk at the property line.
The curb stop belongs to the City of Vaughan, and homeowners should not operate it themselves. Trying to can damage the mechanism and lead to fines or costly repairs. The city will help you locate and inspect your curb stop at no cost, repairs it if it's damaged or stuck, and performs scheduled shut-offs when your interior valve needs work.
To reach the city, contact Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or service@vaughan.ca, or visit the City of Vaughan’s water services page. Set this one link to open in a new tab.
The water meter belongs to the municipality and tracks your household usage. If the meter leaks, the city handles it. The interior shut-off valve, however, is the homeowner’s responsibility. A running toilet or hidden leak can also show up on your meter. Here’s what causes an unusually high water bill.
Main Water Shut-Off Valves in Condo Units
Condo shut-offs work differently than in detached homes, but they're just as important. Depending on the building, your unit has either one central pair of valves or several local pairs. In many Vaughan condo buildings the layout is:
- Two valves for the kitchen sink, inside the cabinet
- Two valves in each bathroom, under the vanity or behind an access panel
- Sometimes a central shut-off pair in a mechanical closet
Some units have key stop valves recessed inside the wall. You'll see only a small tube or opening, and you need a service key to turn them. Ask your concierge or property management for one now, not during an emergency.
These valves mark the line of responsibility. Everything before them belongs to the condominium corporation; everything after them is yours to maintain. If a unit valve fails or won't close, call building management or concierge first. Only condo staff can shut off the floor or riser, and a plumber cannot legally shut down shared building water without their authorization.
The Hidden Risk in Older Shut-Off Valves
Vaughan homes that are 20 to 30 years old often still have their original main valve. These older valves seal with internal rubber gaskets that dry out and break apart over time. Watch for:
- Black specks in your water after using the valve: pieces of the old rubber gasket
- A leak around the handle when you turn it
- A valve that won't close fully, so water keeps trickling
The real danger shows up in an emergency. Many aging valves fail the moment they're turned after years untouched. If yours won't close, the only remaining shut-off is the city curb stop, and while you wait for the city, water keeps running. A manageable repair can quickly become a major insurance claim.
If your valve shows any of these signs, our main water shut-off valve replacement service swaps it for a modern full-port brass ball valve, with the city shut-off coordinated for you.
Smart Leak Protection for Modern Homes
Many Vaughan homeowners are adding Wi-Fi monitored automatic shut-off systems, installed right after the water meter. They watch water flow, pressure, and usage patterns around the clock. When they detect something abnormal, like a burst pipe or a silent leak, they shut the water off automatically and alert you through an app.
Remote shut-off is especially valuable for vacation homes, rental properties, finished basements, and high-value renovations. One of the most widely trusted systems is Flo by Moen. Paired with Wi-Fi water sensors around the house, it can catch small leaks before they cause major damage. Hive 5 installs these systems as part of our leak detection services and helps you choose the right one for your home and budget.
